Nelson Torres-Gomez (He/They)- Operations Manager

Nelson Torres-Gomez (He/They) is our Operations Manager who was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico but was raised in the city of brotherly love Philadelphia. Nelson is Galaei’s current senior with over four years of serving the QTBIPOC Community since January of 2020. They started at Galaei just at the beginning of the Pandemic in 2020 as an HIV Tester which quickly transitioned to Prevention Specialist from there Nelson moved on to being Prevention and Education Coordinator. They continued to apply themselves and made it into the Lead Coordinator and after two years Nelson finally made it into their Operations Manager Position.

Coaching With Nelson: Coaching is unlocking people’s potential to maximize opportunities as they come. In our One-on-one coaching sessions Galaei staff works with a client individually to help them achieve their goals. We use our coaching and one-on-one sessions to support both personal and professional goals of health, wellness, career, and care.

Wardrobe Wednesday: Every Wednesday From 4:30PM to 6:00PM. Wardrobe Wednesday is  an opportunity to ensure that we are meeting unmet needs in our community, specifically with priority populations. We welcome individuals together in a LGBTQ affirming space, providing you with a 50$ gift voucher to get clothing and career consultation at The Wardrobe Philadelphia. Everything from shoes to pants to accessories. 

 

This also supports our mission in addressing health access inequities syndemically by supporting our latinx and black community in addressing clothing scarcity. Through this program we are breaking down barriers that prevent marginalized populations from accessing care. 

 

Thriller Thursday: Galaei provides a safe space to grab a snack and watch a movie with an educational twist. During this group activity we will chat, chew, watch, discuss and dissect the narratives and how queer influences have been present in the media. 

We also discuss storytelling, character development, the plot of the film, and personal interpretations of the film.

Featured Film Friday: Galaei Operations Manager Nelson Torres-Gomez will be hosting “Featured Film Friday” every Friday from 6:30PM to 9:00PM. We utilize this time to bring individuals together in a LGBTQ affirming space where through our three different programmatic initiatives to raise awareness of HIV, destigmatization, PrEP & PEP Referrals, Provide Condom distribution, 1:1 counseling, access to Oraquick which is our FREE At-Home HIV test while watching films that center HIV/AIDS, including those that depict the early years of the epidemic, the impact on communities, and the experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS.

 

  • Offer an affirming, culturally-responsive space to the specified

population(s) cited above who seek HIV prevention and treatment

information.

  • Promote rights-based education around healthcare access.
  • Conduct activities that reduce HIV stigma.
  • Link out-of-care and newly diagnosed individuals that are receiving

services to affirming and culturally responsive HIV medical services within

96 hours.

  • Refer individuals needing HIV testing to gender-affirming, culturally

responsive testing services.

  • Refer HIV negative individuals to gender-affirming and culturally

responsive PrEP services when appropriate.

  • Conduct outreach to priority populations.

 

Nelson’s Saturday Chat n Chew: is a group that allows for us to facilitate and strengthen priority population engagement by providing access to in office services to the community. Once community members are in building we are able to conduct outreach to priority populations. Where we serve an average of 5 individuals Every Saturday. Allowing us to 

  • Conduct activities that will address social determinants of health and

address barriers to engagement with HIV prevention services (e.g.,

provide referrals to address food insecurity, homelessness, mental health issues, etc.

  • Distribute condoms and promote condom use.
  • Offer an affirming, culturally-responsive space to the specified

population(s) cited above who seek HIV prevention and treatment

information.
